Green oak, collected from sustainable sources, is classified as carbon neutral. The tree absorbs carbon as it grows. When the wood from that tree is used as a building material, this carbon is trapped, not released into the environment.

Caring for our planet isn’t optional.

“Nature is not a place to visit.Gary Snyder
It is home.”
Our beautiful planet can’t sustain the pace at which we produce and consume natural resources. It’s for this reason we take a bolder approach to sustainability.
In addition to using sustainable, 100% certified timber in all our buildings, we have a company-wide concern for our impact on the planet and are committed to a low-carbon future.

Modern technology has created a vast range of choices for sustainable construction, yet green oak remains a consistently excellent choice.
Why choose a building made of green oak?
Carbon neutral
The comfortable choice
As a natural material, oak insulates against excessive noise, keeps interiors at a constant temperature and allows for a healthy humidity level – absorbing and releasing moisture in response to the moisture levels in the air.
Zero waste
Working with wood means there’s no need for waste. Offcuts can be manufactured into elements such as the braces or pegs used in the jointing process. Sawdust can be sent to local farms to be used as cattle bedding and smaller offcuts are seasoned & used in wood burners.
Grows old gracefully
As the wood in your oak framed building ages, it develops a striking silver patina. There’s no need to replace any of the building components over time – something you might expect to do with buildings constructed with bricks and mortar or stone.
Low impact & low maintenance
Once the green oak has received rigorous quality checks, all that is left is a simple run through the planer and further sanding/finishing if required. Unlike other timbers, which are kiln-dried or pressure-treated with chemicals, working with green oak requires entirely natural processes. What’s more, green oak weathers naturally, which means it needs very minimal maintenance.
Durable, strong, versatile
The oak tree is a metaphor for strength and endurance – characteristics imbued in its wood. Buildings made with green oak are strong, durable and versatile, suitable for traditional and contemporary designs. They are built to last a lifetime, and, like many of the finer things in life, they only improve with age.
Naturally beautiful
As a material that’s been used in buildings for millennia, green oak has an affinity with the English countryside. The newly built elegance of an Eavoak building mellows to become charmingly rustic as time passes. Your green oak building will work in harmony with its surrounds now and for all time.

The story of our oak
Every plank, beam, and curve we use can be traced back to the forests where the wood was grown, across the channel in Normandy, France. The vast French forestry industry is tightly regulated, and harvested oak trees are swiftly replaced, ensuring an abundant future supply of oak and natural environments.
We source our oak from English Woodlands Timber, a specialist timber merchant based in Cocking, West Sussex. They share our ethos of environmental respect, and we work closely with them to ensure we source only the highest quality, sustainable oak for all our clients’ projects.
The characterful lengths of oak they supply vary in age, from a youthful 60 years old to a venerable 200 years old. It’s quite possible that some of the oak we use would have witnessed the French Revolution!
Legally & sustainably sourced oak
Our timber supplier, English Woodlands Timber, subscribes to chain-of-custody certification schemes through PEFC and GIB. These provide assurance of “legal and sustainable” timber felling. This means the tree and timber we use can be tracked through the supply chain, and the wood is guaranteed to be 100% assured. The 100% assurance represents the strongest assurance of safety and the greatest level of sustainability.
